U8-U14 Tryouts

Announcing Virtual Travel Tryouts for Travel & Tournament Teams for 2020-21!

As NY PAUSE has been extended through May 15, 2020, WSSL has decided to move forward with team formation for the 2020-21 travel and tournament teams rising U8-U14 (2013 through 2007 birth years).  While we don’t know how long PAUSE will last, we are currently planning for a Fall 2020 season and will make adjustments as the COVID situation evolves. We will be forming teams through virtual tryouts, as explained below.  Once we complete the process for rising U8-U14, we will send out information about tryouts for our high school teams (birth years 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002).

For a description of our travel and tournament team programs, please click on the menu option for each under “Programs” on our website. We also have an FAQ that explains the different programs: https://www.wssl.org/programs/program-faq/

To sign up for the virtual tryouts, log into your WSSL in-league account (or create one if you do not already have one), click on Events from the top menus, find the 2020-21 tryout event and click on the link. There is no fee and no obligation. Please make sure to sign up for the virtual tryouts as you must be signed up to be considered.

How will virtual tryouts work?

For players that are not currently on a WSSL travel team, we will use a variety of information to make decisions, including coach, trainer (if you are on a WSSL tournament team or another club's travel team, or participate in our Development Academy) and division head recommendations.  For non-WSSL players, we will take letters and/or player evaluations from current teams/coaches.

We also invite parents and players to submit video of game and practice clips (please limit the videos to short clips and a highlight reel - you can use a variety of apps including tik tok, imovie, coaches' eye, among others to add arrows to identify your player). We are not advocating anyone purchase an app for this purpose - you can also just give us info in the email accompanying the submission to identify your player. Also, it is not necessary to send video - it is up to you.

All videos/submissions should be sent to tryouts@wssl.org – be sure to include your player's name, birth year, and boy/girl in the subject. If you played Core, Tournament Team, or Development Academy with WSSL in fall or winter 2019, you do not need to send anything. We will reach out to the coaches/trainers directly.

We will conduct our virtual tryouts by division, according to the following schedule. Offers will be made on a rolling basis:

What will the 2020-21 practice schedule look like?

As practice schedules can not be known at this time, we refer you to review the practice schedules for Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 on our website (https://wssl.org/schedules/training-schedules/travel-training/) and look for the team which your child is receiving the offer to join. For example if your child is B10 now and will be B11 in the fall, look on the schedule for the B11 practice times for the 2019-20 season. Keep in mind we often have more than one team in each age group and each team has a different practice schedule. We hope to keep a similar training schedule for 2020-21, but are subject to any restrictions that may be imposed to ensure safe distancing which may include practices less often with half teams, and of course receiving parks department permits. We will have to wait and see how the COVID situation evolves between now and September, but we will be in frequent contact.

When do I have to decide?

Emails with offers will be sent out on a rolling basis per the schedule above, and we ask that all players accept or decline no later than 5pm on the deadline date indicated (this info will also be included in the offer email). Players may receive an offer or a waitlist offer. We need to know if your player intends to accept or decline as we are not able to make offers to other new players until we have that information. If we do not hear from you by the deadline, we will assume that your player is not accepting.

What are the fees for 2020-21?

Because we do not yet know what the practice or game schedule will look like, we are not able to determine the full fees at this time. We are asking now only for a $1000 deposit ($135 if approved for financial assistance) to hold your child's place on the team.  We expect fees, when they can be determined, to be the same as 2019-2020 (no increase), assuming a full Fall 2020-Spring 2021 season, or lower/pro rated if that is not possible.  All player that have credits rolling over from spring will have those credits applied against the deposit.

For those needing financial assistance, please email scholarship@wssl.org

The deposit will not be refundable if you later change your mind. If however, we are not able to play in a material way in the 2020-21 season, then we would make a decision at the time to refund or credit your deposits. We are hopeful to play both fall and spring, but also realistic that the evolving COVID situation may only allow for a truncated year/season.

What if I have questions?

We will hold a zoom meeting at 7pm on Thursday, April 23rd to answer questions. Information on how to join that meeting will be sent only to those that have signed up for the tryouts by noon on that date. To sign up for the virtual tryouts, log into your WSSL in-league account (or create one if you do not currently have one), then click on Events from the top menus, find the event for the 2020-21 tryouts and click the link. There is no fee or obligation.

In addition, those receiving an offer should feel free to email Bob Hong, our Director of Travel Programs, with any questions.
