2020-21 Tryouts for Travel & Tournament Teams for High School Age (2002**-2006 birth years)
As NY PAUSE has been extended for sports like soccer through at least July 6, 2020, WSSL has decided to move forward with team formation for the 2020-21 travel and tournament teams. While we don’t know how long PAUSE will last, we are currently planning for a Fall 2020 season and will make adjustments as the COVID situation evolves. We will be forming teams through virtual tryouts, as explained below.
For a description of our travel and tournament team programs, please click on the menu option for each under “Programs” on our website. We also have an FAQ that explains the different programs: https://www.wssl.org/programs/program-faq/
To sign up for the virtual tryouts, log into your WSSL in-league account (or create one if you do not already have one), click on Events from the top menus, find the 2020-21 tryout event and click on the link for your birth year.
There is no fee and no obligation. Please make sure to sign up for the virtual tryouts as you must be signed up to be considered. Make sure you register for the tryout for your correct birth year. If you sign up for the wrong brith year, you will not be able to be considered. The deadline for tryout registration is Monday, June 29, 2020 @ 12:00pm.
***2002 birth year boys and girls who have graduated high school are not eligible to play in our travel program, even if you are deferring entrance into college.
How will the virtual tryouts work?
As part of the tryout process, we are asking players in the categories below to submit video clips and a brief self-assessment:
1) All players born in birth years 2005 and 2006.
2) Players born in birth years 2002 (high school only - no college or gap year players), 2003 and 2004 who did not play WSSL travel in 2019-20 (this includes all players who played for another club in 2019-20 AND returning WSSL players that played only for core and/or tournament but not travel).
You will find more details of what we are asking for when you register for the tryout.
Players who are completely new to WSSL (ie players that did not play for WSSL in any capacity in 2019-20) may also email coach recommendations and evaluations from the club they were with in 2019-20.
Players born in 2002, 2003 and 2004 who played for a WSSL travel team in 2019-20 do not need to send in anything, but ARE required to register for tryouts.
The deadline for video and self-assessment submission is also Monday, June 29, 2020 @ 12:00pm.
What will the practice and game schedule look like?
Our high school travel teams do not play a full season of games in the Fall so that players can participate on their school teams. In the Fall, there are weekday practices for those not playing for their high school teams and weekend practices for all. There is a 3-5 game mini-season in November after the school season is over. Winter training is mandatory for all high school teams, followed by a full Spring season with practice 2x week and games on weekends. High school teams need space to practice, and we use full-size fields either at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx or on Randall’s Island. In general, after school practices start at 6pm. We plan to run buses from the Upper West Side to and from practices. Given the uncertainty caused by COVID-19, we do not know the practice schedule at this time. We will have to wait to see what if any permits we are able to obtain and if there are any limitations imposed by state or local officials with which we would need to comply.
When do I have to decide?
Emails with offers will be sent out on a rolling basis, and we ask that all players accept or decline no later than 5pm on the deadline date indicated in the offer email. Players may receive an offer or a waitlist offer. We need to know if your player intends to accept or decline as we are not able to make offers to other new players until we have that information. If we do not hear from you by the deadline, we will assume that your player is not accepting.
What are the fees for 2020-21?
Because we do not yet know what the practice or game schedule will look like, we are not able to determine the full fees at this time. We are asking now only for a $1000 deposit ($135 if approved for financial assistance) to hold your child's place on the team. We expect fees, when they can be determined, to be the same as 2019-2020 (no increase), assuming a full Fall 2020-Spring 2021 season, or lower/pro rated if that is not possible. All player that have credits rolling over from spring will have those credits applied against the deposit.
For those needing financial assistance, please email email@example.com.
The deposit will not be refundable if you later change your mind. If however, we are not able to play in a material way in the 2020-21 season, then we would make a decision at the time to refund or credit your deposits. We are hopeful to play both fall and spring, but also realistic that the evolving COVID situation may only allow for a truncated year/season.
