G12 West: A Season Summary
Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 9:54 PM
Their second spell in the first division has been a challenge for G12 West this fall. Finding itself often on the wrong end of bad bounces, games have been mostly closely fought, but mostly lost. This group of strong characters and talented soccer players, however, put all their troubles behind them for a rousing end to the season against arch rivals, Manhattan Soccer Club Surf this weekend.
Early on, things did not look like great, when a Surf free kick was converted expertly into a goal. This reminder of how the last game against MSC finished (another free kick turned into a match winning goal in the last second) actually provided a much needed jolt to the West Side team.
Josephine, who has been out due to injury for so much of the season, returned to expertly partner the ever-dependable Sydney at the heart of the defense and this made a huge difference. On a day when the whole team performed, fullbacks Sadie and Evelyn were able to extinguish any threats on the wing before moving things forward. While strong defense provided the platform, it was the midfielders who engineered the turnaround. As ever, Carolina’s dribbling skills and trusty left foot from the edge of the box, were an everpresent threat, but it was a classic poacher’s goal from Natalia, who rarely misses when she has an opportunity, that opened the Red Bull’s scoring. This was soon followed by Allie’s unstoppable run through the Surf’s defense from left midfield, capped off by her accurate and expert low finish into the right hand corner, for their second tally.
The second half saw a commanding performance by the Red Bulls, who came out ahead 4-1. The forward line came into its own, as early on Ella and Jesse chased down every ball and every defender to swing the momentum firmly in the Red Bulls’ favor. Goalie Yo Yo’s huge and accurate punts up field gave them plenty of balls to run onto. The third goal came from one such clearance when Mya, not for the first time in the game, outran the defense on the right flank to put a ball into the edge of the penalty box for Sophia to latch onto. The opposing keeper could only half parry the ensuing screamer that came from Sophia’s boot and Gabi followed up to smack the ball into the net. A fourth goal came from Mya, at the third time of asking, a sweet shot over the keeper’s head after another blistering run at the defense.
Overall, this was a great team effort. Great thanks are due to the resourceful, talented and diligent parent coaches John and Karen and team manager, Nancy, and also to coach Alex, whose coaching prowess and inspiring dedication to the girls’ improvement, has been a constant this season. Overall, we can look forward to the fall with great expectations of more to come.
Measure For Measure

The Hospital for Special Surgery engages in injury prevention programming. Adolescent athletic-based injury prevention is of particular interest given the rise in sports popularity and the incidence of related injuries.
The hospital recently provided a comprehensive injury prevention screen to a portion of kids from WSSL travel soccer teams, along with providing education on injury prevention and safe movement patterns. The program included:
Musculoskeletal assessment performed by Medical Doctor (focused on knee/hip/spine)
Flexibility, core strength, and leg strength assessments by a Physical Therapist
Individual movement assessment with video analysis performed by a Physical Therapist
Small group exercise coaching session with a Sports Performance Specialist, providing education on how to move most efficiently to increase soccer specific speed and targeted exercises aimed at deficits found in the screen.
- A take-home packet of those exercises and information, designed specifically for each player depending on their needs.
It can’t have been as much fun as it looks, can it?

B11W’s Demi, Kai and Cato were among the West Side Travel athletes tested at the Hospital for Special Surgery this weekend as part of a no-cost program to asses risk of injury based on current physical attributes. The players and their families were also provided exercises that could help them avoid injury in the future.

Despite playing with no subs, players and coaches from G9E are feet of the ground after their 5-0 win over rival Manhattan Soccer Club Magic at Randall’s Island yesterday. Not only are the girls wonderful footballers, but they had also earned a perfect 6.0 sportsmanship award in the fall season!
